Director & Curator
HAI Art Studio & Gallery 20 Years
For 20 years Palazzolo has engaged NYC's mental health community as artist-in-residence and curator at the Healing Arts Initiative. Betty Marks & Francis Palazzolo co-founded the HAI Studio & Gallery in 1994 (she retired as gallery director in 2007, and was followed by Quimetta Perle).
With Palazzolo's residency he organizes a safe artistic empowerment zone for mainly people of color who are diagnosed with severe mental illness. While many of their struggles are compounded with substance abuse, homelessness, incarceration, or being members of the LGBTQ+ community, they take action with their artwork to weigh against stigmatization. Palazzolo curates socially conscious shows to increase their visibility and to advocate for greater agency.
