Curator Francis Palazzolo brings together a group of underserved artists in NYC to disrupt the high degree of cultural polarization. Aesthetic and ethical links are organized between diverse people that might otherwise go unnoticed or unfulfilled. The artists are mainly people of color who are diagnosed with chronic mental illness. Encouraged by weekly discussions with Palazzolo, they go outside of their homes and treatment settings with cameras as conduits for interpersonal engagement. The artists learn to introduce themselves to the general public by considering people they find interesting who they’d like to meet. Photographing these encounters breaks through the fear of the unknown and barriers to acceptance and normalcy. Armed with business cards & social media, the artists easily exchange information and stay in touch with their new connections.
