The portraitXchange is an artist-in-residency project by Francis Palazzolo that occurs at Safe Havens & Drop-In Shelters in the Bronx NY. During 2018-2019, this socially engaged project is funded by a NYCDHS Enhancement Grant. Palazzolo offers residents an opportunity to create an uplifting experience during their transitional housing experience. Together they enhance the resident’s visibility and agency by sharing intimate conversations, collaborating to make the resident’s portrait, framing the artwork, and hanging it on the wall. The residents proudly display the content of their character in the facility. In conjunction with moving to more permanent living quarters, the residents may choose to take their portrait with them. Art supplies for this project are generously donated by local business through the work of Materials for the Arts. In order to maintain the agency’s confidentiality policy, residents’ identifying information and the names of facilities are withheld.
