the "Institutional Gold" article in Hype Magazine Vol. VII, includes my interview with artist james lee byars and whitney museum director david ross. my photo of byars's performance art included six others, notably, art critic tom mcEviley and the mudman performance artist kim jones. together they sniffed seven cultural institutions in New York City during a tropical depression as I documented their deep breath's in 1987. this performance fits neatly into byars's oeuvre of utopian ideals. the article is also breath of fresh air in the mist of this institutional smell series.
